Erté (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892–1990) is a renowned artist known as "The Father of Art Deco". He began designing jewelry much later in life. According to several reputable sources, he embarked on a career as a jewelry designer at age 86. His late-life jewelry creations were conceived as “Art to Wear,” meticulously made with precious stones and inspired by themes like the nautical world, peacocks, and Egyptian culture. He produced around 328 limited-edition jewelry designs.
The “Nile” necklace is part of Erté’s late-career jewelry collections that draw heavily from his fascination with Egyptian motifs and Art Deco geometry. This is part of a collection that also includes the serigraph "The Nile" and other prints. We believe this necklace was designed in the early 1980s. The necklace has the makers mark, "Erte" as well as a hand engraved "85/250" indicating this was a numbered piece in a limited edition of only 250 pieces made. There is also a CFA stamp indicating the jeweler (Circle Fine Art Cooperation) that produced these pieces according to artist specifications. "STER" and "14K" stamps indicate the metals.
